When are the Assessments?

ELA Assessment: Tuesday, April 15, 2025 and Wednesday, April 16, 2025

  • Make Up Assessments: Through Friday, May 16, 2025

Math Assessment: Tuesday, April 29, 2025 and Wednesday, April 30, 2025

  • Make Up Assessments: Through Friday, May 16, 2025

Science Assessment: 5th Grade Tuesday, May 6, 2025

What is the format of the assessments?

After the success with the computer-based format this past spring, students in Grades 3-5 will continue to take the ELA, Math, and Science New York State Assessments using the Computer-Based Testing (CBT) model. Below is a link to sample questions sorted by academic area and grade level in order to preview the computer-based testing model including both example test questions and the online testing tools. Additionally, test accommodation features, such as Text-to-Speech, Reverse Contrast, and more are available in the online Question Sampler. Below is the link to try it out!

How can I help my child with the ELA Assessment?
  • Provide both fiction and nonfiction books at home that are at an appropriate level
  • Talk about books using evidence from the text to support answers to questions or opinions
  • Encourage writing in response to reading and support your child in providing evidence from the text to support their written answers
  • Discuss the meaning of unfamiliar words
How can I help my child with the Math Assessment?
  • Ask questions and review homework to better understand if your child understands why as well as what the answer is
  • Apply math in real world situations
  • Spend time practicing math fact fluency that is grade level appropriate
How are the assessments scored?
  • Level 4- Students performing at this level excel in standards for their grade.
  • Level 3- Students performing at this level are proficient for their grade.
  • Level 2- Students performing at this level are partially proficient for their grade.
  • Level 1- Students performing at this level are below proficient for their grade.
How are the assessments from the NYS Assessments used?
  • Parents receive the results in the mail and on Parent Portal in September.
  • Teachers use the scores as one piece of data to determine if support services would be beneficial to the student.
  • School districts can analyze their results to be sure that their curriculum and instruction matches the New York Next Generation Learning Standards.
