Board Elections
What all Prospective School Board Members Should Know
March 1, 2024 - Petitions for Board of Education candidates can be requested or picked up with Jodi Shantal, the District Clerk. Mrs. Shantal may be reached at 315-824-6310 or jshantal@hamiltoncentral.org
April 22, 2024 - Petitions for Board of Education candidates are due by 5:00 p.m. These should be handed in at the District Office.
May 14, 2024 - Public Budget Hearing - 6:00 p.m.
May 21, 2024 - Budget Vote & School Board Elections - 12:00 Noon - 8:00 p.m. in the Dave McKay Board of Education Room/LGI
CRITERIA FOR MEMBER OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION:
Every school Board member:
- must be able to read and write;
- must be a qualified voter of the district (US Citizen, 18 yrs. or older);
- must be and have been a resident in the district for at least one year prior to election;
- may not have been removed from any school district office within the preceding year;
- may not reside with another member of the same school board as a member of the same family;
- May not be a current employee of the school district; and
- May not simultaneously hold another incompatible public office.
LENGTH OF TERM: The term is for three years unless filling an unexpired term.
PETITIONS:
- Shall be directed to the District Clerk.
- Shall state the name and residence of the candidate on each page of the petition.
- Shall state that candidate is being nominated for full term.
- Shall be signed by at least 25 qualified voters of the district OR 2% of the number of voters who voted in the previous election – WHICHEVER IS GREATER.
- Shall state the residence of each qualified voter signing the petition.
- Shall be filed with the District Clerk not later than 30 days prior to the school election at which the candidate so nominated is to be elected.

Campaign Expenditures
Campaign Finance Reporting Requirements
Under state law, you must file a sworn statement with the district clerk disclosing both your campaign expenditures and contributions received.
You must file statements at three different times during the election period:

30 days before the date of the election for the board seat

Within five days before the election

Within 20 days after the election
As a candidate, you must also file a copy of your expenditure and contribution statements with the commissioner of education if:

Your expenditures exceed $500
-
Your expenditures plus the expenditures of others on your behalf made with your approval exceed $500 (Note: Donors may make expenditures of up to $25 without your permission if the donor files a sworn statement with the clerk and the commissioner stating that you, the candidate, did not approve the expenditure)

The contributions you received exceed $500.
