What is a School Counselor?:

Professional school counselors, formerly referred to as “guidance counselors”, are educators who have master’s degrees in school counseling and are certified (K-12) in New York State. School counselors are advocates for students and work to help students be successful academically, socially, and emotionally. *

The Role of a School Counselor:

School Counselors provide a range of services based on individual student needs. To help students be successful they consult and collaborate with teachers, parents, administrators, and outside agencies.

Services include (but are not limited to):

  • individual counseling
  • classroom lessons
  • group counseling
  • academic guidance and support (study skills, test taking, organization)
  • crisis intervention and response
  • career exploration/planning
  • referrals to outside agencies
  • course selection/graduation requirements
  • college planning
