Hamilton Central School has adopted a Code of Conduct for students, staff, parents and visitors. Any person wanting a copy of the Code of Conduct may pick one up in the Secondary Office.
Code of Conduct
Student Responsibilities:
1. Students have the responsibility to attend school regularly and on time.
2. Students have a responsibility to support the educational process within the school.
3. Students have a responsibility to abide by all policies and regulations of the school.
4. Students are responsible for their own behavior including learning self-control, practicing restraint, and cooperation.
5. Students are responsible to respect, protect and maintain school property and that of other students.
6. Students have a responsibility to dress in a decent and appropriate manner.
7. Students have a responsibility to strive for successful completion of their courses.
8. Students have a responsibility to be considerate of the health, safety, and welfare of other students and school personnel.
Student Discipline:
It is the right of students to expect that the disciplinary actions of administration and teachers shall be firm, fair, consistent, and appropriate to the offense. The student has the right to an education and any disciplinary measure that deprives him/her of this right shall be used only in extreme cases. Suspension proceedings shall be carried out in conformity with state laws and HCS regulations.
It is the responsibility of students to know and to understand school regulations, to make every effort to follow and uphold them, and to recognize that those in authority have the responsibility of maintaining the orderly process of education. Any change that is desired in regulations deemed to be unfair or discriminatory should be pursued through established channels.
Prohibited Conduct in School:
Basically, school regulations are the same as we all must obey in our everyday life. The accumulation of repeated disciplinary offenses results in more severe punishment. The following offenses will result in disciplinary action:
- Assaulting a student*
- Cheating
- Classroom disruption
- Computer misuse
- Failure to sign in/out
- Extortion
- Food/drug outside cafeteria
- Harassing/threatening staff*
- Illegal absence
- Insolence
- Insubordination
- Leaving class early
- Littering
- Loitering in cafeteria
- Loitering in lavatories
- Parking violations
- Pornography
- Public display of affection
- Skipping detention
- Smoking
- Throwing objects
- Unprepared for classes
- Use/possession of drugs*
- Use/possession of marijuana*
- Assault of staff*
- Bus misconduct
- Continual class tardies
- Endangering health/safety of others
- Fighting
- Forgery
- Harassing/threatening student*
- Illegal tardies
- Inappropriate clothing/behavior
- Leaving building without permission
- Loitering in building after school hours
- Loitering in halls
- Overdue excuses
- Poor attendance
- Possession of stolen property
- Truancy
- Drugs
- Use/possession of drug implements*
- Vandalism*
- Weapons possession*
- Vulgar language
- Other actions of a similar nature
* These are violations of New York State law. Other offenses in the list may be violations of state law depending on the circumstances.
